A mosaic, considered any artwork or image created from the arrangement of smaller pieces of material - such as stone or glass - is an art form dating back as far as the third millennium BC. These individual pieces of material are known as tesserae. While unremarkable on their own, tesserae form stunning visuals once pieced together in sequence. A popular art form in ancient Greek and Roman architecture, mosaics adorned the interiors of important structures such as basilicas. The art form is still used extensively in professional arts and crafts in present times, including classic wall art.
